How to Leave a Comment

I have had several people email, text, or call me and ask how exactly they are supposed to post a comment here on Greg Rides Trails.  Today I'm answering those questions with a step-by-step walk through on How to Leave a Comment.

As you probably know, the blogging platform I use is Blogger.  Blogger's comment set up can seem complicated at first, but is very user friendly once you get the hang of it.

1.  To begin, find the post that you want to comment on.

2.  Read the post so you know what you're writing about.

3.  When you get to the bottom, you will be confronted with one of two things.  If you are on the homepage,
At the bottom of the post you will see this:

To leave a comment, click where it reads "2 Comments." It will bring you to the bottom of the post page (what you would see if you scrolled to the bottom of the post when on the page dedicated to that individual post... the other "thing" mentioned above):

4.  Type your comment in the box directly below the words that say "Post a Comment."

Here is where the confusion normally starts....

5.  Select your "profile" from the drop down box next to the words "Comment as."
(If you are logged into a Blogger/Google account you probably won't have to worry about this.)
6. If you have a Google Account, LiveJournal, WordPress, TypePad, Aim, or OpenID select one of those and then click "Post Comment."  You will then be prompted to log in with your ID if your computer isn't logged in already.

7.  If you do not have one of those accounts, there are two options left to you.
  • If you want to be totally anonymous, select "Anonymous."
  • But if you want to leave your name so other people know who's writing, select the "Name/URL" option.
8. A small box will pop up.
This will allow you to enter any name you desire, and a URL for your blog, Facebook, or whatever you'd like. You do not have to have a specific account with any website to use this feature... anyone can do it.

9.  Fill in your information and hit "Continue."
10.  Write your comment.  This is the most important step!
11. Click "Post Comment." Or select "Preview" to see what it'll look like.

12.  Tada!  There's your comment!

13.  After you've written your comment, you can choose to subscribe to comments to see if someone responds to what you've written, if you have connected with an account.

See, it's really not that tough!  I have broken it down into way more steps than is probably necessary, but this should clear up any confusion that you're having!  If you have any more thoughts about the mechanics of commenting, please leave a comment below to get the discussion rolling... because I know you all know how to do it now!

Typically I have to hit "post comment" twice. The first time it blinks back on with the my comment text box and the "post comment" and "preview" buttons still there - sometimes with a "confirmation" word that you have to type in in order to post. Then hit "post comment" again and you should be good to go. That may be where the confusion is getting people?

Hey Eastwood, thanks for the input, and the additional clarification!

Well as I looked at the comments section in more detail as I created this post, I just thought that it works pretty dang good and there's no real reason to change it. Plus, I don't have the technical mojo to get the job done.
